How much does a new website cost?

This is a question that we get an awful lot, and understandably so! People want to know how much a new website is going to cost – who can blame them, it’s an important business expense.

It’s not so simple…

The answer is a bit more complicated than a straight figure however, it really depends on what you’re looking for your new website to do.

There are so many factors that influence the end price! You have to ask yourself questions like:

  • How many pages do you want on it?
  • What kind of function are you looking for you website to carry out?
  • Do you need search engine optimisation?

… and many more.

Every client that we get is different, and thus have different requirements and expectations for what their website will do for them.

This is why our prices have ranged so much: from £2000 all the way up to 6 figures. You can actually get websites for a lot less than that, but the less you pay, the more work you have to do yourself.

Alternative question: How much can it make you?

One alternative question to ask yourself instead of “how much does a new website cost?” could be along the lines of “how much can we make from that website?” ie. how many leads do you expect to be able to generate from that website. Your website is a hugely important branch of your marketing strategy so it should capture and generate as many leads as possible.

Alternative question: How much can you save?

Another way to look at a website isn’t about the number of leads or turnover or profit, it’s how much time can it save you.

This is becoming more and more important. There’s never enough time in the day and everyone always ends the day with more things to do than when they started. Saving time as an objective of a website is just as important as creating leads.

An example:

We recently completed a website for a lettings agent. When we initially spoke to this lettings agent, they had a figure in mind of what they wanted to spend. It was a reasonable figure, they could clearly do a reasonable amount with that figure. We could have taken that at face value and could have built that website and they would have had exactly what they initially wanted.

However, what we actually did was rather than taking that at face value, we dug a little deeper into their business and their general business processes and sales, trying to find out what steps they currently take to get things done.

We managed to identify a process where they were spending somewhere in the region of 3-4 hours a week just duplicating data across different platforms, portals etc.

When we found that out we worked out how a new website could automate that process for them so that they wouldn’t have to do it manually from then on. This one automation set-up saved the letting agent somewhere between 150-180 hours per year!

If we base a the letting agent’s outgoings on a very conservative rate of £50 per hour, and we saved them 150 hours per year, that’s £7,500 saved per year.

If we can save them from doing this duplicating task for the price of £7,500, then essentially over the course of a year, they are getting the website for nothing.
If to save them the 150 hours have to do a bit more work and the website ends up costing the letting agent £15,000, within 2 years they have recouped that money but also had the use of that website and the opportunity to generate leads, business and promote their brand over 2 years.

We believe that it is always worth having a discussion expanding on what your business practices are, your processes, and seeing whether there is a reason beyond the money for getting a new website.

Most of the websites we build nowadays tend to be time driven rather than money driven. So perhaps “How can a new website save me time?” might be the question that is most valuable to anyone toying with the idea of updating their website.
